Why innovative businesses need custom database development

When Network 14 came to us and wanted a custom database to solve their business challenges, we were delighted to help. Their model is truly innovative. They are an “ethical sourcing channel for businesses wanting to attract high-quality talent responsibly. Businesses receive ‘Sponsored Nominations’ for open Assignments posted to the Network. Upon successfully completing a hiring process the entire fee is donated to a charity selected by the Sponsor. [And their] unique Sponsor/Nominee process delivers qualified insight to reinforce the decision-making process.” This closes the loop, putting great people forward for roles (based on a trusted endorsement) and driving a real investment into social corporate responsibility.

What were the business challenges?

First, they had a large scope. The platform spanned multiple sectors including Finance, Legal, Marketing, Sales and Technology in the UK. Their candidates needed to first find a sponsor and then they could apply for a posted role. On top of that, the Network 14 team needed to monitor everything, control user access and keep an eye on content. Off-the-shelf was never going to work for such a unique approach. So, we started, as we always do with discovery days – we ask the big questions, start to form a plan and document everything.

Prototyping

Next came prototyping. Bespoke database development is a living, breathing thing that evolves and grows as it comes to life. By making wireframes, our clients like Network 14 can see how the system is going to work and what functions would be needed to support their core requirements. Across an 8-week planning phase, we created interactive prototypes and elaborate functional specifications to meet their needs. It was easy for them to see it in action and know where to both invest more versus trim a little.

Designing

When it came time to put code to keyboard, we went with Laravel – a PHP framework we know and trust. We used it to develop a bespoke website and portal for Network 14 based on the designs & functional specifications from our prototyping phase. By maintaining good communication and regular updates, we kept everything moving to plan and to budget. When it launched, there were already £15k in donations and several companies signed up and hiring in real time.

What does this mean for your business?

If you’re doing something truly new, truly innovative – there’s not going to be support available off the shelf. That’s where working with experts like our team here at Wirebox comes in. Our approach consistently delivers above expectations in even the most groundbreaking or niche areas from party directories to microdonations. The key is proper planning at the start so everyone is clear on deliverables, requirements and timelines. From there, just making sure we have a regular dialogue pushes these projects forward so they don’t end up stalled in development.

And lastly, our platform agnostic view ensures we’re not pushing software, but solutions. If you want a partner like that in your corner, reach out today.
