The Challenge_
In early 2024, Wirebox was approached by the Angling Trust to take over the support and maintenance of their grant and funding scheme website — a vital platform enabling clubs and members to apply for funding.
However, the platform faced several critical issues:
- The site was running on Wagtail CMS 5.2, which had reached end-of-life and no longer received security or performance updates.
- The PostgreSQL database was version 13, also approaching end-of-life on October 29, 2024.
- Hosted on Heroku, the infrastructure required all software to be up-to-date and supported for security and compliance reasons.
Our Solution_
We stepped in with our Support & Maintenance Solution, immediately focusing on stabilising, securing, and improving the system.
System Upgrades
- Upgraded Wagtail CMS to the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) version, restoring access to security patches and key performance updates.
- Migrated PostgreSQL to a supported version, ensuring Heroku compliance and future-proofing the platform.
Proactive Maintenance
- Deployed automated testing tools to flag potential issues before they became problems.
- Resolved bugs and vulnerabilities as they arose, delivering a smoother, more secure experience.
Content & Permissions Management
- Managed ongoing requests like content updates, user access controls, and permission adjustments to streamline admin workflows.
Improving the Grant Application Process_
In addition to backend upgrades, the Angling Trust wanted to enhance how funding applications were submitted.
We delivered:
- A redesigned grant application system for the public, simplifying the process for applicants.
- A new interface for managing both public and private funds, reducing administrative time while improving control.
These updates made it easier for users to apply and significantly reduced manual processing for the Angling Trust team.
