Wagtail and API development for charity
The charity sector needs top-of-the-line solutions just like any organisation. However, with often tighter budgets, money has to be spent even more wisely. In this piece, we’ll explain why choosing a partner who has experience in Wagtail and API development for charity makes more sense than going without (and can even help you get a leg-up on your fundraising efforts for less coin).
Magento API for microdonations
A few pence at a time, Pennies is changing the world. They had an API, but it wasn’t up to the task of onboarding merchants at scale. For the future, they needed mobile payments and better reporting, too. We looked at the failure points and helped them improve their servers to handle more payments per second, then added more security & proper redundancies. The new system we built can handle 1,200 donations a second, which would allow about 10 million donations a day. Everything is now reported on, and the performance of the API is faster than ever before. The result? 221 million micro-donations have been processed, with over £53m raised for more than 1000 charities nationwide.
“My charity has worked with Wirebox for over 3 years. Their expertise, attention to detail and help have been invaluable to us.”

GroceryAid needed migration help
With a proud 160-year history, GroceryAid needed to bring its tech stack into the now. We supported them with online assistance and technical development. We showed them the value of integrating all of their payment systems for a single financial view. And we helped them feed rich content into their charity and fundraising-specific CRM so they can make more data-driven decisions and campaigns. We also supported them with a bespoke microsite: “GroceryAid currently uses Wagtail for their main website, but needed a second site to advertise and promote their yearly awards programme to celebrate the backing they receive from the retail industry. In order to fulfil their requirement, we worked closely with the marketing team to produce a solution and designs that would ensure that the management of the site remains simple and easy, but stands out to users. Utilising Wagtail’s multi-site functionality, we developed the GroceryAid Awards website, which sits on GroceryAid’s domain.”
Wagtail development
Originally known as the British Kidney Patient Association (BKPA) and first established by its founder, Elizabeth Ward OBE, in 1975; Kidney Care UK (KCUK) is changing outcomes for people living with kidney issues. It’s an important charity that a lot of people rely on. As such, we were brought in for our fast transition times and understanding of how to technologically support critical services. We didn’t fly blind either. We built everything locally, then on a staging server for Q&A and then brought it online with no downtime. We’ve supported them since then with SEO optimised landing pages, increased site speed and security and keyword insights to drive even more traffic to their core support pages. In addition, we have worked with KCUK to deliver a number of digital campaigns, including a collaboration between KCUK, Astrazeneca and Wirebox to promote a quiz around the risk factors of Chronic Kidney Disease. It’s just further proof that having a partner who gets what you do really matters.
