The Challenge_

Gravis Capital, a leading UK-based investment management company, was facing a major operational bottleneck.

They were handling large volumes of critical investment data—across multiple funds and portfolios—entirely in spreadsheets. As the datasets grew:

  • Spreadsheets became unwieldy and difficult to manage
  • Data retrieval tasks that should take minutes took hours
  • Risks around data integrity, version control, and security became increasingly concerning
  • Collaboration across teams was slow and frustrating

This legacy setup was not only inefficient—it was holding the business back. The business developed a database within the Laravel framework, to speed up processes and provide better availability, but required software updates and maintenance…

Our Solution_

Wirebox worked closely with the Gravis Capital team to assist with their bespoke database platform to replace spreadsheets with a secure, scalable, and easy-to-use system.

Key Features & Improvements
  • Centralised Data Management: All investment data is now managed within a single, structured platform
  • Automated Calculations: Manual spreadsheet formulas were replaced with robust, repeatable processes
  • Secure Access: Data is shared with the right people, securely and efficiently
  • Time-Saving Interface: Investment managers can access insights and reports in minutes, not hours

Security & Stability: Laravel Framework Upgrade_

The original system was built on Laravel 9, which had reached end-of-life and posed both performance and security risks.

To ensure long-term stability and meet auditing requirements, we:

  • Audited and optimised the existing codebase
  • Addressed issues from Penetration Testing, prioritising security and data integrity
  • Upgraded the entire platform to Laravel 11, the latest supported and secure version
  • Best practice security updates, mandatory Password resets after 3 months and the requirement for symbols and minimum length
  • Monitoring and reporting using leading 3rd Party tools such as Synk and Airbrake, and issues are alerted directly into our Support team.
  • Additional Security updates and code amends, which, for Security reasons, we won’t publish!
  • Utilisation of Laravel Shift – a tool that saves Development time and effort, reducing costs whilst maintaining software

These updates made it easier for users to apply and significantly reduced manual processing for the Angling Trust team.

Wirebox continues to assist in maintaining and supporting the Gravis Capital Laravel Database.
