As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, the Wirebox team had the pleasure of attending the careers event at West Harts College, meeting hundreds of students to talk about careers in technology, digital development and the opportunities available through apprenticeships.

It was an inspiring day. From curious first-year students exploring their options to final-year learners ready to step into the industry, the level of enthusiasm, ambition and thoughtful questions reminded us exactly why apprenticeships remain such an important part of our business.

Supporting apprenticeships since 2013

Wirebox has proudly supported apprenticeships since 2013. They originally gave us a chance, with the help of government funding, to bring new staff into the business to support the development team, sales & marketing and testing. Over the years, we’ve seen apprentices grow into confident developers, project contributors and valued team members, and many of our strongest team members started their journey as apprentices!

This long-term perspective is what makes apprenticeships so powerful. We know they:

  • Develop real-world skills from day one
  • Create career pathways without traditional barriers
  • Build loyalty, confidence and capability
  • Strengthen the UK technology ecosystem

What they were curious about

Throughout the day at West Herts College, we spoke to students about:

  • What it’s actually like to work in software development
  • The difference between college learning and industry projects
  • How apprenticeships compare to university routes
  • What skills matter most in tech today
  • What Wirebox looks for in applicants

One of the most encouraging parts of the event was the quality of the questions. Students weren’t just asking “How do I get a job?” – they were asking about growth, progression, mentorship and how to build a long-term career in digital. That mindset is exactly what apprenticeships are designed to support.

Why we support apprenticeships

As a UK-based technology company, we believe strongly in building talent locally and creating meaningful opportunities. Apprenticeships allow us to:

1. Develop talent the right way

We can mentor individuals from the start, teaching not just technical skills but professional standards, collaboration and problem-solving.

2. Build sustainable growth

Rather than constantly hiring externally, apprenticeships allow us to grow organically and strengthen our internal culture.

3. Give back to the community

Supporting young professionals in Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas isn’t just good for business; it’s good for the wider tech ecosystem locally.

4. Create career pathways

An apprenticeship at Wirebox isn’t a temporary placement. It’s a genuine career opportunity, and we want our apprentices to work with us for decades.

Bridging education and industry in tech

Events like National Apprenticeship Week play a crucial role in closing the gap between education and industry in tech. That’s because there’s often uncertainty around what working in tech actually involves. Meeting students face-to-face allows us to demystify the industry, offer honest advice, share realistic expectations and encourage confidence when they’re ready to join the workforce. For many students, it’s the first time they’ve spoken directly with a tech company. And that interaction can be the difference between uncertainty and confidence in their ambitions.

Ahead for Wirebox apprenticeships

We’re proud to have supported apprenticeships since 2013, and we remain committed to continuing that journey.

That’s because we know the future of technology in the UK depends on nurturing talent early, investing in skills development and creating accessible pathways into the industry. And apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to achieve that.

A huge thank you to West Herts College for hosting such a well-organised and energetic event, and to all the students who stopped by to speak with us. We look forward to seeing some of you take your first steps into the industry in the years ahead.
