As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, the Wirebox team had the pleasure of attending the careers event at West Harts College, meeting hundreds of students to talk about careers in technology, digital development and the opportunities available through apprenticeships.
It was an inspiring day. From curious first-year students exploring their options to final-year learners ready to step into the industry, the level of enthusiasm, ambition and thoughtful questions reminded us exactly why apprenticeships remain such an important part of our business.
Supporting apprenticeships since 2013
Wirebox has proudly supported apprenticeships since 2013. They originally gave us a chance, with the help of government funding, to bring new staff into the business to support the development team, sales & marketing and testing. Over the years, we’ve seen apprentices grow into confident developers, project contributors and valued team members, and many of our strongest team members started their journey as apprentices!
This long-term perspective is what makes apprenticeships so powerful. We know they:

What they were curious about
Throughout the day at West Herts College, we spoke to students about:
- What it’s actually like to work in software development
- The difference between college learning and industry projects
- How apprenticeships compare to university routes
- What skills matter most in tech today
- What Wirebox looks for in applicants
One of the most encouraging parts of the event was the quality of the questions. Students weren’t just asking “How do I get a job?” – they were asking about growth, progression, mentorship and how to build a long-term career in digital. That mindset is exactly what apprenticeships are designed to support.

Events like National Apprenticeship Week play a crucial role in closing the gap between education and industry in tech. That’s because there’s often uncertainty around what working in tech actually involves. Meeting students face-to-face allows us to demystify the industry, offer honest advice, share realistic expectations and encourage confidence when they’re ready to join the workforce. For many students, it’s the first time they’ve spoken directly with a tech company. And that interaction can be the difference between uncertainty and confidence in their ambitions.
