10,000 small businesses uk summer celebration at the serpentine pavilion_
I was recently invited to attend the Goldman Sachs alumni 10,000 Small Businesses UK Summer Celebration at the Serpentine Pavilion.
The day was the hottest day of the year so far, so travelling was not ideal, but it was great to be in London and feeling like you are abroad.
The Serpentine Pavilion in Kensington was designed by Japanese architect Junya Ishigam and was another great location for the 10,000 Small Businesses event.
Talks
We were hearing from the leaders of some of Britain’s favourite businesses including Rowan Gormley (CEO, Majestic Wines), Phoebe Gormley (Founder, Gormley & Gamble), Chrissie Rucker (Founder, The White Company) and Nick Wheeler (Founder, Charles Tyrwhitt). It was inspiring to hear from these leaders who employ thousands of people and some of their life and business experiences.
Advice ranged from hiring up and getting experts to run certain parts of the business. Each of the leaders had a personal relationship, Rowan Gormley and Phoebe Gormley, father and daughter. Chrisse Rucker and Nick Wheeler, husband and wife.
Personally, I found Phoebe Gormley particularly interesting. She started the first women’s only tailor on Savile Row. She is only 25 and has achieved a great deal, even being on an Apple advertisement. She mentioned that one of her first clients made a big initial purchase and set up a monthly order. This break helped her and we all need breaks to be successful, it is how you deal with the break that determines success.
But we all make our own luck and we need to work and hard and get a break, so well done to her.
Overall the talks were highly enjoyable and it was good to see what is possible, just getting there is the hard part.
It was also a great opportunity to meet other people on the course and catch up.
